"1982 was truly a fine year for the UK punk singles, Inspired by the fierce rioting that swept the under-privileged parts of the nation the previous year, "summer of '81" by The Violators begins innocuously enough with a simplistic, sombre bass intro, but quickly escalates into a passionate frenzy fuelled by huge pounding rhythms, molten guitars and desperate female vocals. Whilst on the flip-side, this time powered by intense male vocals, the irrepressible Live Fast, Die Young rages as id there no tomorrow. All in all, a commanding one-two that turned heads the length and breadth of the country and guaranteed the band a place in the annals of punk rock history. A shame then that they played so few shows and released to little vinyl, one can only imagine what may have resulted had they been stuck in a decent studio with a proper budget and let loose on a full album. Confirmed in Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1979 by vocalist Shaun (Cess) Stiles and bassist John (Matchi) Marchington (both formerly of The Dismal Sports), The Violators also comprised Helen Hill on vocals, Mark Coley on guitar, and Anthony (Ajax) Hall on drums, and (like their near-neighbours from New Mills, Blitz and Attak) were soon signed to Worcestershire label, No future. Their vinyl debut came with two on the hugely popular "A country fit for heroes" 12", the moody "Die with dignity" and exuberant "Government stinks" both ably demonstrated the diversity and musical ambition at work. Sadly, after two glorious punk singles that both made the top ten of the independent charts the aforementioned classic, "Summer of '81", and "Gangland" and a 12" that mainly compiled all of their vinyl appearances to date, the band imploded before theyd even hit their creative stride. Helen and Coley left to form the brief-lived Taboo, whilst Shaun and Co. recruited Louise (Lou) King on vocals and Andrew Hill on guitar for the "Life on the red line" single. It was the last stand for The Violators though as Shaun, Matchi and Lou went on to form Ice the falling rain, who did one further single, "Life illusion", for the No future offshoot future, before also disintegrating.

The late 70 early 80's UK hardcore punk band From New Mills, this was another of the good Punk/Oi! bands produced in the Stockport/Manchester area. The Violators used the stark imagery from the film "A Clockwork Orange" to great effect. Never really comfortable in the punk role they, nevertheless, produced some great songs and were much liked by Garry Bushell of 'Sounds' who gave them a lot of press. They split very soon after the release of their second single. Helen and Coley formed Taboo, but never issued any singles. The rest of the band continued briefly as The Violators, releasing a further single on No Future's sister label, Future Records. Styles and Marchington then formed "Ice The Falling Rain", releasing further material on Future Records. Please note that this is not the same band who released a single called "NY Ripper" in 1980."

From the moment I first heard the Violators I was blown away by their sound and on further investigation their well written lyrics impressed me no end. It was just a shame the band split up without ever doing an album - That was sheer criminal. Still their records sit proudly in my collection and what blinders they are too! After bumping into Cess(Vocals) on the net I decided to run an interview with him and this is what he had to say HERE.

BZ started out (as Battle Zone) in Essex, England in 1989 and stopped in 1994. During this time they released 2 singles 'Way Of Death' and 'Right To March' and one album 'Nowhere To Hide'.

It's fair to say they were a Fascist band. No point in pretending they weren't. In fact it's fair to say that Alex and I were total opposite ends of the fence - Him Fascist and myself Anti Fascist.

We both mentioned each other in the publications we were doing at the time. Alex's fanzine was called 'Last Chance' and mine was called 'Revenge'. I guess what we wrote about each other could be described as 'Not very flattering' and that is putting it mildly!!

Eventually Alex and his band/fanzine disappeared off the scene as he had a run with the infamous Combat 18 who pretty much controlled the Right Wing Skinhead scene at the time.

Nothing was heard of Alex until he re-surfaced in Peru where he reformed the band choosing the name 'BZ'.

Alex on vocals
Leonello on guitar
Leo on second guitar
Jota on bass
Lucho on drums

After being asked by Phil Templar to play in NYC only Alex could get a visa in to America so 'BZ USA' were formed.

Alex on vocals
Chris (Bombardiers) on guitar
Perry (Templars) on bass
Phil (Templars) on drums

Now you're wondering why I'm featuring BZ in these pages? Alex has more than denounced his past in recent interviews and it's fair to say he's a changed person. Alex was man enough to admit he was wrong and that is good enough for me.

Oi! Warning Fanzine have run an exclusive interview with Alex in which he talks openly about the past and present. Sean from Oi! Warning Fanzine has kindly let me put this interview on line and you can read it HERE.

They're Evil Because We Said So

You will hate Iran. They are the new demons, everything they do is wrong. If they save little puppies, it's because they're vicious, evil little puppies that eat children for breakfast, if they set flower bulbs it's because they grow into huge fuck-off Triffids that bite the heads off young girls and spit them into the faces of innocent farmers and if they offer up a white flag of peace it's so they can batter you over the head with it until your brain is a puply mush and you speak like George Bush!

If you don't agree, the British media will ostracize you, it will throw paper darts at you and steal your lunch money, it will publically discredit you for being a Bros fan, it will take the piss out of you for going to see Friday 13th Part 126 at the cinema, it will leave you standing naked in the cold and ask you where ya fucking global warming is now!

Yes folks, the new boogie man is Iran, Iraq has left town, and North Korea has been relegated to the back burner. Hoodies are still a concern and those smokers are all a bit dodgy still (except national journalists that smoke, they can be excused because they have a stressful time making up this shit) and anybody with more than one ASBO is still to be feared - but not as much as Iran. Iran is the new Satan, the new kid catcher and the reason your car won't start in the morning. It's why the prices of house are so high and it explains why our weather is suddenly rubbish, Iran is solely responsible for global warming, teenage mums and the world's heroin problem. Yes my friends you must hate Iran with a passion, and they only thing you must hate more than Iran is Iran-lovers.

It is duty to hound out people who express any sympathy towards Iran, you must beat them over the head with rolled up copies of The Sun and Daily main, you must fire patriotic CDs at their heads and play God Save The Queen at full blast in their face every time you see them - it's for their own good!

Any you can relax in fear, because the country once again has a common enemy to rally against, and if we don't go to war, we can always go back to expressing our hatred for single parents again. God bless the mass media!

The Meaning of Censorship: Truth & Beauty Covered in Duct Tape

Two people having sex in a beautiful and real way or a half naked woman selling a new sports car? The word FUCK in a song that is so visceral you tremble with the guitar strings or non-profane words in a speech of lies from a president? The naked breasts of a body honest to our skin and to what we all truly are stripped away or reality television shows with Beverly Hills beach bunnies getting nose jobs and their 4 breast augmentation? These are the options we are not given. This is what we are obsessed with. This is how we define profanity and let idiocy take its place. This is the sheltered mentality of censorship.

On public television, nudity is illegal along with a list of “bad” words…yet can anyone truly say they haven’t been bombarded with imagines of advertisements cheapening sex and stretching the innuendos as far as they can reach on the sexual spectrum, but never are we allowed to see the honest side of sex.
Lyrics to songs must be altered to not damage the virginal ears of the public, but idiotic rap artists can get on and sing about abuse in “slapping the hoes” with million dollars worth of bling-bling on, who ironically turn around and go to third world countries and say they care…but that is another article entirely. Artists with a cause or controversial opinion in that they want to challenge the status quo aren’t allowed on mass airwaves if they want to keep their work whole without alteration.

The point isn’t one I will drag on or make much bigger than it truly is…its simple: STOP CENSORING ART IN ANY OF ITS FORMS!!! Few things make me angrier than when I am singing along to a song I love and the bleep is ever present over the “bad” word or when I watch a tv show that pans away for the sex scene but not the one where the women is wearing a 2 inch skirt and tank top and rubbing all against a guy to steal him from Blanche or Kendall or any other soap opera-esque name imaginable.

Honesty is beautiful and honesty can’t exist with censorship of the arts. In the political spectrum when news doesn’t show us the facts on war or other crisis the world is in, the situation becomes ever more desperate. Truth is what we as humans are entitled to, but as long as decisions are made for us of what is immoral or profane based on their prudish codes, we will never be free to let the truth in…as long as honesty and truth are bound with duct tape by the powers that be, we all mine as well wear matching duct tape over our mouths and ears.

"Respond formed in late 2005, and exploded onto the UK’s stages in March 2006, launching themselves upon an unsuspecting public in a flurry of rock fuelled energy. The bands sound has best been described as edgy, classy rock with a punk/pop undertone and is centred around strong guitar led melodies. Their live shows have earned them a reputation as strong, energetic and passionate performers, setting them apart from the industry norm.

The four piece outfit have gigged relentlessly in their first year, cutting their teeth at many of the UK’s legendary music venues. Most notable were their shows at The Cavern in Liverpool, The Garage (Downstairs), 93 Feet East, The Standard Music Venue, The Water Rats, The Rock Garden, and The Barfly in London, and The Met Lounge in Peterborough. In September 2006 the band were hand picked to support chart topping act Rooster as part of their ’Its Good To Be Here’ Tour. They have also played numerous other areas of the country, gaining an excellent response in cities such as Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Coventry, Cambridge, and Leicester to name but a few.

In April 2006, Respond were the first of five finalists selected for Lite FM’s UK Live Music Week. Their tracks have also caught the attention of various other radio stations both in the UK and Europe. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire have also played numerous Respond original tracks on air, alongside various live interviews, and acoustic sessions. The band have become a firm favourite of the Drive Time, and Audio Files shows. Lesson Learnt has become their most requested track by an unsigned artist. In March 2007, London based Total Rock Radio also featured a live broadcast of the same track, and recently named the band as PlayMusic Magazines Unsigned Band Of The Week.

Million Little Pieces and Lesson Learnt also won Respond the opening slot on the Rockingbeerfest’s main stage in conjunction with BBC Radio, where they wowed crowds at the 3,000 capacity arena. Dozens of bands fought for the slot in the BBC run competition but the public voted Respond the clear winners. The band also won The Standard & Culture National Battle of the Bands 2006, and appeared live on national television as part of BBC1’s Annual Children In Need fundraiser.

Respond will return by popular demand for the second year in a row to many festival stages, including Strawberry Fair, Newton Music Festival and the Rockinbeerfest in 2007 as well as debuting at The L Festival amongst others.

The coming year already promises to be a successful one for the band, with reviews already secured in Street Voice, PlayMusic and NME Magazines, and Respond have received interest from more than one recording label. Upcoming shows at further high profile venues will follow shortly, with Respond supporting breaking acts such as The Draytones."

Respond are an up and coming band and well worth checking out. It wont be long before they become a well known name on the independent circuit. I have that much faith in them I decided to run an interview with their vocalist Hayley-Ann Roberts. Read what this cool lady has to say HERE.

"Formed in 1981 out of the ashes of "The Last Resort" The warriors played twice in london at the "100 club" and the “Blue Coat Boy" in Islington, and recorded the songs for The compilation “Horrorshow ( oi oi that’s your lot) “Wicked Women" (united skins) then called it a day. Line Up: Roi Pearce – Vocals Arthur ‘Bilks’ Kitchener – Bass Charlie Duggan – Guitar John Fisher – Drums .

That was untill September 1995 when Bieze, a skinhead from Belgium, wanted to do a “Last Resort” show in Brugge. Roi was up for it, but Arther and him fell out over musical difference. SAXBY (origional Last Resort vocalist) was recruited on vocals with Charlie and Andy, unavailible or unwilling to do it, as Arthur recruited Daryl Smith and Dustin Burgess (Argy Bargy). The gig was for November, but it was postponed until January 1996, so an album was recorded in the meantime "The Full Monty", Step One.

Gigs in Canterbury, Cardiff and Herne Bay followed, plus in 1996 the second album "Noizy Bollox", Step One. The band didn’t do anything for 18 months until 1998. 2nd Line Up: SAXBY – Vocals Arthur Kitchener – Bass Daryl Smith – Guitar Dustin – Drums

Arthur and Saxby decided to make a mini album with their own Streetheart label. They recruited Steve Wyse and Bob Coltal to play on five of their seven tracks, the album was called “Bad Guys”.

The band were not doing much untill Japanese gigs were offered in late 1998. Daryl and Dustin couldn’t play these gigs, so we were stumped until Herve (Gundog Manager) now Deadline, suggested James on guitar and Tariq on drums. Gigs in Herne Bay and France followed and the decition to use them in Japan was taken. Three gigs in Japan Osakar and Kyoto.

This was to be the most famous of Warriors line ups so far, with Gigs in Holland, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Norway, USA, Punk Aid in Southend, London Garage, London 100 Club, Underworld, 12Bar Club, Brixton, Dome and Holidays in The Sun in Morcame and Blackpool. Many appearences at the famous Cardinals Cap pub in Canterbury.

At a punk gig in Deal earlier this year Saxby was talking about putting a band together again - Russ offered himself up for Bass duties and within a month Saxby had recruited Dave and Russ had asked Chris (Crimewave) to drum. We are now busy reheasing for Camber and beyond - See ya there."

The Warriors are a good Street Punk band who I wanted to interview as soon as I was told they had reformed. Read what founding member Saxby has to say HERE.

The Battle of Time

Set the clocks back and don’t ask any questions. Well, as one might have expected, I do have a few questions that I plan are asking right here. Here in the states, we recently set our clocks ahead an hour for daylight savings time…nothing odd about is expect it comes three weeks early to supposedly “help our energy crisis,” which would probably be the first thing in terms of conservation that America has done. But sitting there at midnight on Saturday ready to change the hands of the tool I call a clock, it dawned on me that we in this country may just be a similar type of tool in not realizing that the government has inadvertently now taken ownership over time.

So is it a just statement to say that time is own bought? And if it is, what element can’t those “powers that be” control? What other things have they started to clench their fists around to beat us into submission with?

I’m reminded of The Cave by Socrates where he tells his audience at the end of a cave there is a man strapped to a chair with the inability to turn or move and all he can watch are shadows on the back cave wall…behind him are the puppeteers and flame creating his entire reality and one day he will stand, walk out and face the world…this man, he said, is you. Our reality and perception as it is, is one created by the government and power that lords it’s control over us…until we release those bonds and walk out, we’ll stay mesmerized by those shadows and let those ties dig into our skin until we bleed to death…or at least let all our free will and individuality bleed out to leave a malleable shell for the government to shape.

So what does this all do with time? What does this article even mean? Is it even necessary? I would have to say that when the government starts having control over what the clock says, try to impact what our hearts feel or do, and limit our innate freedoms its time to question the world and wonder how they got that power, why they have it, and how much their power limits us from ever cutting the ties that bind from their puppeteer strings and walking out into true freedom.

Intolerance Within The Scene

To me the scene was all about free thinking and breaking down barriers. I have no objection to people having a laugh but when that joke is all about degrading or humiliating a certain section of society I think it's out of order and I will question that kind of behaviour. Many will say 'Oh I'm just joking' but these are the first people to react if they are the brunt of humiliation.

Over the past few years I believe the scene has taken a step to the right. anyone who criticises people for using words like 'Nigger', 'Chinky', 'Paki', 'Queer' are branded as being the Punk Police.

It seems that Political Incorrectness is the 'In' thing but is that what the Punk scene is all about? While I would agree there are certain instances where some people who question political incorrectness have gone over the top it is fair to say the vast majority who have questioned political incorrectness have been spot on. I fully agree by those who make a stand against shit attitudes.

People in the scene who stand up for other people's human rights should be praised and not slated for it. However in many cases this isn't happening - Instead they get ridiculed for it. Why?

When some one is picked up for the ridiculous things they say their first reply is these people can't take a joke and then go on a rant about certain lyrics in other scenes such as 'Rap'. My reply back to those people is 'Do two wrongs make a right?' You then usually get some dumb response calling you a 'Miserable bastard' or being put down as the 'Punk Police'.

What these so called Punk Rockers are doing is upholding the ideas and myths put out by right wing of society. To me these Punks are forgetting their roots. As I said earlier Punk Rock was about free thinking and breaking down barriers so let's see much more of it. All it boils down to is thinking a little before you open your mouths.

A little bit of tolerance doesn't go a miss - Try It!

The Red Eyes formed in 1997 taking their influences from the more melodic early Punk/New wave bands. After recording an album and a few compilation tracks they were invited to tour with Stiff Little Fingers in the late 90's. It was one one of those dates where a friend caught them live and picked up some of their material. What I heard I really enjoyed and was going to contact the band for an interview. However I never got around to it and the band just became a passing memory as I heard no more about them. After bumping in to founding member 'Alan' on My Space I just had to interview the Red Eyes and you can read what he had to say HERE.

A Young Marine Speaks Out

I'm sick and tired of this patriotic, nationalistic and fascist crap. I stood through a memorial service today for a young Marine that was killed in Iraq back in April.

During this memorial a number of people spoke about the guy and about his sacrifice for the country. How do you justify 'sacrificing' your life for a war which is not only illegal, but is being prosecuted to the extent where the only thing keeping us there is one man's power, and his ego.

A recent Marine Corps intelligence report that was leaked said that the war in the al-Anbar province is unwinnable. It said that there was nothing we could do to win the hearts and minds, or the military operations in that area. So I wonder, why are we still there? Democracy is not forced upon people at gunpoint. It's the result of forward thinking individuals who take the initiative and risks to give their fellow countrymen a better way of life.

When I joined I took an oath. In that oath I swore to protect the Constitution of the United States.

I didn't swear to build democracies in countries on the other side of the world under the guise of "national security."

I didn't join the military to be part of an Orwellian ("1984") war machine that is in an obligatory war against whoever the state deems the enemy to be so that the populace can be controlled and riled up in a pro-nationalistic frenzy to support any new and oppressive law that will be the key to destroying the enemy. Example given – the Patriot Act. So aptly named, and totally against all that the constitution stands for.

President Bush used the reactionary nature of our society to bring our country together and to infuse into the national psyche a need to give up their little-used rights in the hope to make our nation a little safer. The same scare tactics he used to win elections. He drones on and on about how America and the world would be a less safe place if we weren't killing Iraqis, and that we'd have to fight the terrorists at home if we weren't abroad. In our modern day emotive society this strategy (or strategery?) works, or had worked, up until last month's elections.

My point in this; to show that America was never nationalistic. If anything they were giving their allegiance to the state of their residence. This is shown in the fact that the founders created states with fully capable and independent governments and not provinces that were just a division of the federal government. These men believed that America was a place where imperialistic values would be non-existent. Where the people trying to make their lives better by working hard, thinking, inventing and using the free market would tie up so much of normal life that imperialistic colonization and the fighting of wars thousands of miles away for interests that are not our own would be avoided. They believed this expansion of power could be left to the European nations, the England, France and Spain of their time. However this recent, and current influx of nationalistic feeling has created an environment where giving up your rights, going to a foreign country to fight a people who did not ask for us to be there, nor did their leader do anything to warrant us being there, and dying would be considered honorable and heroic. I don't believe it anymore. I don't believe it's right for any American to go along with it anymore. Yes I know that we in the military are bound by the UCMJ and somehow don't fall under the Constitution (the very thing we're suppose to be defending) but sooner or later there is a decision that every American soldier, marine, airmen and seamen makes to allow themselves to be sent to a war that is against every fiber this country was founded on. I know that when April rolls around I will be thinking long and hard on that decision. Even though we in the military are just doing as we're told we still have the moral and ethical obligation to choose to do as we're told, or to say, "No, that isn't right." I believe that if more troopers like me and the professional military, the officers and commanders, start standing up and saying that they won't let themselves or their troops go to this illegal war people will start standing up and realizing what the heck is going on over there.

The sad fact of the matter is that we are not fighting terrorists in Iraq. We are fighting the Iraqi people who feel like a conquered and occupied people.

Personally I have a hard time believing that if I was an Iraqi that I wouldn't be doing everything in my power to kill and maim as many Americans as possible. I know that the vast majority of Americans would not be happy with the Canadian government, or any other foreign government, liberating us from the clutches of George W. Bush, even though a large number of us would like that, and forcing us to accept their system of government. Would not millions of Americans rise up and fight back? Would you not rise up to protect and defend your house and your neighborhood if someone invaded your country? But we send thousands of troops to a foreign country to do just that. How is it moral to fight a people who are just trying to defend their homes and families? I think next time I go to Iraq perhaps I should wear a bright red coat and carry a Brown Bess instead of my digitalized utilities and M16.

Notice I never once used the word homeland in any of this. I have a secondary point I want to bring up now. Never once was the term homeland ever used to describe the country of America until Mr. Bush began the department of homeland security after the 9/11 attacks. Taking a 20th century history class will teach us that the most notable countries in the last century that referred to their country in this way were Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Hitler used the term fatherland to drum up support, nationalistic support, for his growing war machine. He used the nationalism he created in the minds of the Germans to justify the sacrifice of their livelihood to build the war machine to get back their power from the oppressive restrictions the English and French had put on them at Versailles. This is the same feeling that has been virulently infecting the American psyche in the last hundred years. This is the same feeling that consoles a mother after her son is killed in an attempt to prosecute an aggressor's war 10,000 miles away. It's also known as Patriotism these days, but I say, "No more." No more nationalistic inanity, no more passing it off as patriotism. Patriotism is learning, and educating oneself to understand what their country really stands for.

I heard a lot during the memorial service about how the dead Marine did so much good for others and how his helping others was like a little microcosm of America helping because we have the power to do so. Well if we have the power to help people why aren't we helping in Darfur where hundreds of thousands of people have died in the last 10 years. Saddam was convicted and sentenced to death for killing 143 Shiites who conspired to assassinate him. (I know all you "patriotic" Americans would be calling for the heads of anyone who conspired to assassinate supreme leader Bush). And yet we spend upwards of 1 trillion dollars and nearing 3,000 lives to help these Iraqis when they don't even want us there. Not to mention we don't have the legal justification to be there. I guess we should wait around for the omnipotent W Bush to decide who we should use our superpowerdom to help next. It's about time to throw him and the rest of the fascists out. Moreover it's about time to start educating Americans about their past and history, and letting them know that imperialistic leaders are not what the founders of this great country wanted.

Philip Martin
Philip Martin has been a Marine for 2 years. He is in the infantry (a "grunt"), and spent 7 months in the al-Anbar province of Iraq. He went on more than 180 combat patrols in and outside of the city of Fallujah, where he was hit with 2 IEDs (luckily never injured) and was involved in a number of firefights. He is currently stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA, and due to return to Iraq for a second deployment in April 2007. He is 21-years-old.
