STACIA
is back from her travels. The Congress hotel was the site of our reunionI
Luncheon guests included Stacia, Maya Love, (Folk Singer and April's daughter),
Jody and her daughter Lori (who kindly hosted Stacia in Scottsdale while she
healed from the most recent operation on her leg). And there was STACIA! Looking
wonderful and smiling and hugging me!
We lunched and chatted, took photos
and had a wonderful time. Urged on by the girls Maya Love was persuaded to give
an impromptu concert in the garden! "Drowning In Despair," &
'Wendy's Song." were two of the songs she played. Maya, 25, was.......
WONDERFUL!
MAYA LOVE is working on her first
album and plays folk clubs in Tucson, Miami, Los Angeles and New York; so watch
out for a LIVE PERFORMANCE BY MAYA LOVE CABALLERO.
Lunched with Courtney Smith and
Scarlett at the Congress Hotel last week. They enjoyed their Arizona vacation!

And from CODE PINK, our friendly

April 29, 2004
1,150,000 women marched for their
lives on April 25th "clad in hot pink," Monday's LA Times front-page
article reported. Demonstrators came from across the US and other countries in
the largest march in history. A giant THANK YOU to all the women who came,
helped, and marched in this amazing event.

Le Festival de Fez sera lieu Mai
28 au 5 Juin 2004 en Maroc!
The Star Line Up for 10th
Anniversary Fez Festival
Includes Miriam Makeba and Youssou
N’Dour.
Photo of Miriam Makeba thanks to http://music.lycos.com/pictures/fullimage.asp?QT=A&QW=Miriam+Makeba&AN=Miriam+Makeba&AID=&MID=17261&MPI=0&PI=6
Mary Finnigan takes up the story:
"World Music stars from around
the planet will gather in the holy city of Fez in Morocco to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music from 28 May to 5 June
2004. The spectacular line-up includes living legends like South
Africa’s Miriam Makeba and Youssou N’Dour from Senegal.
The programme for each Fez Festival
is based in a theme. This year it is “Traces of Light” – representing a
beacon of hope and a message of peace from the Islamic world. The festival’s
founder and Director General Faouzi Skali summarises its mission:
“With the creation of a space
where spirit, art and thought converge,” he writes,” the festival and its
concurrent Forum dialogues provide an opening onto new perspectives.”
The aim of the Fez Festival Forum
“Giving Soul to Globalisation” is to encourage understanding and
collaboration between diverse cultures and spiritual traditions. Inspired by the
festival theme, the 2004 Forum will focus on transforming ideas that emerge from
the dialogue into action. Participants include the French Foreign Minister
Dominque de Villepin.
In March 2004, the
festival’s international organisation, The Spirit of Fez, will extend this
mission into North America, with a concert tour to more than 20 cities in the
United States."
The festival opens in a
dramatic open air setting -- the walled courtyard of the Bab Makina Palace --
with a Sufi ceremony including the Whirling Dervishes of Konya, inspired by the
13th century mystical poet Jallaladin Rumi.
The Festival chooses individual
performers and ensembles rooted in the essence of spiritual traditions –
Tibetan Buddhist Dancing Monks for example, Qawwali music from Pakistan and
Russian Orthodox chants. Others at Fez in 2004 include The Tallis Scholars
from the UK, mystical songs from the Lebanon, sacred traditions from Morocco’s
Atlas mountains and sacred songs from Palestine.
Performers who combine their roles
as entertainers with active engagement in politics are a feature of the Fez
Festival. In 2003 there was Gilberto Gil, rock star and Brazil’s Minister of
Culture. This year the veteran Syrian MP Sabah Fakhri makes a third return visit
to the festival, performing his Songs of Spiritual Love.
There’ll be some amplified
guitars and a rousing grand finale from the Arc Gospel Choir from Harlem, but
overall the Fez Festival remains true to the origins of world music – a level
of artistic integrity that defies the recent trend towards a more westernised
idiom.
